MOBILE, Alabama – Secretary of the U.S. Navy Ray Mabus says he’d like to see fines paid by BP and other companies responsible for the Deepwater Horizon disaster return to the gulf coast. The former Mississippi governor was speaking in Mobile Friday. Mabus says money paid by BP in the form of fines can go to good use helping the gulf coast recover from the oil disaster.
“To help off set some of the environmental damage, some of the economic damage and take care of some of the long term health tracking we may need,” says Mabus. Mabus says the perception of damage and fears of oil were far more powerful than the actual environmental damage the spill caused. The secretary added that the Navy has continued its commitment to the gulf by purchasing gulf seafood for sailors.
