House Hearings Set for Maritime Issues

H

The complexities of maritime law will make their way to D.C. this week. The presidential visit to the Gulf Coast will of course dominate the gulf oil spill story today (Tuesday) and his meeting with top BP executives will no doubt be tomorrow’s news.

But on Thursday, the story shifts back to some hard questions from Congress as a House committee on Maritime Transporation ponders how the Deepwater Horizon could be classified into a category that allowed less staffing than other rigs of a similar situaiton.

That committee is chaired by U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall of West Virginia, who is likely pleased that at least coal mines in his home state can’t be registered in the Marshall Islands.
