Oil Hits Horn Island

O

Eyewitness sources are reporting that oil is hitting the environmentally sacred ground of Horn Island, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore just off the coast of Mississippi. Horn Island is one of several thin barrier islands, important to a wide variety of wildlife. It is also a migratory bird haven. The island is part of a federally protected region and considered a natural treasure.

As oil comes ashore on Horn Island, retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen is allowing BP to disengage from finding, containing and cleaning up the oil. Across the region, residents are shocked that BP response efforts are being scaled back drastically while the oil continues to be an enormous threat to our islands, beaches, marshes, estuaries, and ultimately, our way of life along the Gulf Coast. Allen is NOT getting the job done down here.

Coupled with that insulting government report about most of the oil being “gone” last week, it seems BP and its partners in government have decided the danger has passed. Too bad nobody told the oil.

More as the story develops.
