Oil companies in Louisiana are facing hundreds of millions of dollars in environmental cleanup costs, but not if state Representative Neil “Mr. Oil” Abramson can help it. This week, Louisiana state lawmakers began considering legislation surrounding so-called “legacy lawsuits” – property-owner claims against oil companies for failing to clean up a “legacy” of land and groundwater contamination left behind from decades of hazardous production operations. The fireworks have already begun, [...]

The Louisiana legislature will consider a flurry of industry-backed bills in the coming weeks – all of which aim to inhibit the right of property owners to sue oil companies for failing to clean up a “legacy” of land contamination left behind from decades of hazardous production operations. As the legislative battle surrounding “legacy lawsuits” comes to a head and our elected officials must choose between supporting the contractual rights [...]

Royal Dutch Shell is blaming “natural seeps” for the 10-mile-long slick observed Wednesday evening between two of the company’s largest-producing sites in the central portion of the Gulf of Mexico. Despite Shell’s denial that either of its Ursa or Mars oil platforms is to blame, aerial surveillance footage shot by On Wings of Care pilot (and former NASA physicist) Bonny Schumaker casts doubt on the “natural seep” scenario (see photos [...]

There’s more oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico this morning. Royal Dutch Shell, Europe’s largest oil company, has dispatched a spill-response vessel to monitor a one-mile by 10-mile expanse of oil sheen between two of its major production sites in the “central portion” of the Gulf – roughly 130 miles south of New Orleans. The deployed vessel, the Louisiana Responder, has skimming and boom capabilities. From an official Shell [...]

Forces are gathering in Louisiana. On one side are oil companies and their boosters in the state government. On the other side are landowners with property long contaminated by toxic oil sludge – an insidious industrial witch’s brew of dangerous chemicals from lead to benzene to radioactive radium-226. Landowners, who leased their private property to oil producers, are now suing those companies for contaminating their land. In all too predictable [...]

Dead dolphins are washing ashore by the hundreds on a stretch of coastline less than 100 miles long in Peru. The corpses are stacking up so quickly that removal and disposal efforts are overwhelming local authorities. Commercial fishermen estimate that more than 3,000 dead dolphins have washed up on the beaches here over the last three months, nearly 500 in recent days. It is one of the largest dolphin die-offs [...]

All the slick BP tourism ads and fat research grants and indignant denials in the world can’t change one crushing reality for the Gulf Coast: There’s still fresh, highly toxic oil from the Macondo reservoir fouling our waters and shoreline. The “old-world” fishing community of Bayou La Batre, once hailed as the “Seafood Capital of Alabama,” has been dealing with that painful reality for nearly 24 months. Many commercial fishermen [...]

The post-spill recovery of the Gulf of Mexico took a couple of big hits this week – revelations that indicate a full recovery may take years to realize. NOAA released a “damage assessment” study showing that Gulf bottlenose dolphins – nearly two years on from the worst oil spill in U.S. history – are severely ill, exhibiting signs of anemia as well as lung and liver disease (see link to [...]

In the wake of the BP oil spill, hundreds of dead bottlenose dolphins – some visibly oiled – washed up on Gulf Coast beaches at a rate nearly 10 times the norm. Many more died at sea. Dozens were stranded alive, severely ill and disoriented. During the summer of 2011, NOAA conducted “comprehensive physicals” on 32 live dolphins to determine the “post-spill health” of the mammals in Barataria Bay, one [...]

For decades, oil companies in Louisiana – the backbone of the Gulf Coast’s oldest and wealthiest industry – indiscriminately and with impunity contaminated private property with highly toxic chemicals ranging from lead to benzene to radioactive radium-226. Landowners are now suing the responsible companies, in a breed of cases called “legacy lawsuits,” for environmental damage that presents grave health risks and destroys the value of the property. These are lawsuits [...]
