Over this Easter weekend, I had a chance to absorb quite a bit of coverage of what’s happened in the Gulf of Mexico in the four years since BP’s massive Deepwater Horizon rig exploded. I had a couple of thoughts. One was that with the passage of time, the news coverage of the BP anniversary has actually seemed to increase over last year. It’s good that the news media — [...]

Sunday will mark the 4th anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon rig explosion, which started the massive oil spill that has harmed the Gulf to this day. Anniversaries are a difficult thing. I can only imagine the pain that the family and friends of the 11 rig workers who were killed, not to mention the scores of Gulf cleanup workers who became ill, must feel this of year. At the same [...]

A constant theme since I started this blog nearly four years ago has been the impact of the BP oil spill on the marine life in Gulf of Mexico. One reason for that is that it seemed like the federal authorities were happy to do the bidding of BP and tell the public that everything was nearly back to normal in a matter of weeks; even President Obama made a [...]

A stunning scientific study, released earlier this year with little fanfare, found that undersea currents pushed oil from BP’s 2010 Deepwater Horizon catastrophe as far as Florida’s Tampa Bay and is linked to diseased fish populations off that state’s lower Gulf waters. The report, published by researchers from the University of South Florida, shows that BP’s toxic oil damaged a much wider swath of the Gulf of Mexico than previously [...]

This week, folks who live near Lake Michigan got a small taste of what it’s been like to be a resident of the Gulf Coast in recent years: A leak at a BP refinery has spilled an unknown amount of oil into Lake Michigan in Indiana, with the Coast Guard on Wednesday estimating that at least nine to 18 barrels (378 to 756 gallons) of oil were spilled. The spill occurred Monday [...]

On one hand, it should come as no surprise that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce wants to enter the dispute over the BP’s multi-billion dollar settlement with residents and small business owners on the Gulf Coast, or that it wants to enter on the side of the Big Oil giant. While the name “Chamber of Commerce” may invoke bucolic images of a 20th Century Main Street, with its hardware store [...]

History keep repeating, and not in a good way. Today marks the 25th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez accident and massive spill in Alaska, which for years was the standard by which all oil spills were judged…until BP’s Deepwater Horizon disaster came along. Ironically, the four-year anniversary of that accident — which killed 11 people and spewed 5 million barrels of oil into the Gulf — is just a few [...]

A few of you may not remember 1989 very well, but I do. America was experiencing the first few months of the George Bush presidency — not the son but the father, George H.W. Bush. The B-52s and “Love Shack” were at the top of the music charts. But the spring’s big news story was the crash of the giant oil tanker the Exxon Valdez, which ran aground under the [...]

It’s not much of a Valentine’s Day for much of America, snowed in by yet another massive winter storm. But here in the Gulf, one of the few parts of the nation that’s snow-free, we’re dealing with a different kind of heartache these days: A flurry of scientific reports documenting the very real, and very traumatic, impacts from the Deepwater Horizon catastrophe and spill that took place in our waters [...]

Jane Lubchenco is a little like the monster in a bad horror flick — every time that you think she’s been vanquished, she keeps coming back. Lubchenco was the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA, in the aftermath of the BP oil spill. And to the extent that the federal government consistently sided with the British oil giant instead of the American citizens of the Gulf Coast, [...]
