A “Long Song to the Earth” – now more than ever

A

There’s nothing better than popular culture for raising social awareness, and right now there’s no issue that’s more in need of social awareness than climate change. At the end of this month, the world’s leaders — including President Obama but also most of the chiefs of state of the world’s largest nations — are gathering in Paris for what will hopefully produce a real approach for fixing the problem of greenhouse gas pollution and rising temperatures that are already causing droughts, stronger hurricanes, and rapidly melting polar ice caps and glaciers.

That’s why I want to give special recognition to a longtime friend, the environmental activist and writer Jerry Cope, and his remarkable new project, an all-star musical effort that’s called “A Love Song to the Earth” and which is intended to support the efforts of the United Nations Foundation and Friends of the Earth, which are leading the charge for climate change action. The musicians who appear on this track are a Who’s Who of the music industry, including Jon Bon Jovi, McCartney, Colbie Caillat, Sean Paul, Sheryl Crow, Fergie and more. (There’s also a montage of regular citizens in the video, including yours truly — I was very proud to offer my support for this effort.)

Here’s how Jerry described the project in a recent interview:

“Toby Gad, John Shanks, Natasha Bedingfield and I began the ‘Love Song’ project to raise voices and spirits to support the world’s leaders this year as they negotiate a global climate agreement in Paris this December. It is critically important that we take the actions necessary to ensure a stable, safe climate system for all life on the planet. It is our ‘Love Song to the Earth.’”

The song’s co-writer, Natasha Bedingfield, added: “Many people turn a blind eye arguing that everything is OK environmentally. The song reminds us that having ownership of our world means taking care of it. With this song we wanted to talk about the environment in a way that would help people feel empowered to do something rather than be paralyzed by fear.”
